c1940: Broadway Chadderton

Tony Robinson writes: These prints are of Broadway Chadderton: top left Main Warehouse, top right Dispatch Area, bottom left Distribution Area, and bottom right Packing.
They were taken off the originals which I had in my hands, but they were recalled before I could scan them — they were in frames behind glass and would have needed stripping down to get to the photos. I was one of the first three to get made redundant in December 1988. The old HMSO had moved to Heywood and Stakehill, and the Main Block was moved to where the Power Station was when the Cooling Towers and the Power Station was demolished. The old HMSO Press is still on Broadway, and still going strong, but it has been renamed to T3.
Thanks Tony, I used to have dealings with the Warehouse when I was on Sales. John Owens worked to George James at one stage. The last Manager I dealt with was Alex Mackie (retired to the Manchester area). Main customers were DSS and Inland Revenue — vast racks of stocks. My first contact with Manchester was the Rep Unit (Paddy Cochrane) and OMTS (Sam Garwood, Jim Billington — later Brian Earley and Bill Bones). Brian Blackmore and Jim Wilson both worked in the office. Happy days! All the best. Reg
