On 29 November 2018 John Eason received the sad news that Arthur has died.
Arthur joined HMSO Contracts Division in 1953 as a ‘Reconstruction Examination Entrant Executive Officer.’ Other EOs in the Division at the time included Kath Daviss, Jim Curtis, Winifred Stokes and Margaret Crawley. He went on to become Deputy Director (Principal) of Warehousing and Distribution Division, working to Frank Davey and alongside Andrew MacDonald, Bob Youl and Tony Gummett.
John Eason adds: I spoke with Arthur’s son David, who seems to be as nice a guy as his dad, and it seems Arthur succumbed to pneumonia. He was 98, and had been in the Epsom Beaumont home for about three years. He had a great love of sport, especially cricket, and played for the HMSO team for many years. He re-kindled my interest in the game, and we spent many happy days at Lords watching Middlesex and England. Together with Anne we met for lunches in the Waterloo area, often in an Italian restaurant about 100 yards from Cornwall House. Arthur was a lovely man and we are both happy to have enjoyed his friendship. We shall be making a donation to the British Heart Foundation in Arthur’s memory, and will send our condolences to his daughter Jennifer, whom we have met and who has inherited his sporting ability, being a good golfer. I have informed Harvey Wild, himself a mere 96, who has known Arthur since he was Warehouse Manager at Manchester.
