23 August 2021 – From Norma Groom

Hi Reg, Thanks for latest reports on everyone in HMSOldies. Trust you and family are well. We are both fine. Chris had his cataract surgery early July and his sight is 100% better than it has been for years. We were quite concerned as he only has the one eye, having lost the other one aged 11 when he fell in a very prickly bush and got a thorn in the eye which turned septic.

When we watch Sky News we feel quite sick at the number of new cases and deaths daily. Cannot understand why the government has taken away the need for wearing masks etc.

Reg have you heard anything from Peter Macdonald recently?  We cannot get any reply when we try to get him on his landline number. Also have you heard how Val Bailey is?

We are in Spring now, weather here in Fish Hoek is fine, but we have friends in Bethlehem in the Free State who have snow and it is bitterly cold. Temperature was -8 a couple of nights ago. We took Peter there, it took three days to get there by road.

Have not got any more news: been watching The Crown, and The House of Windsor on Netflix – both very enjoyable and full of events which we could relate to.

Best wishes to you and all old colleagues from HMSO.

Norma and Chris

Hello Norma, Good to hear from you, among the turbulence of the world as we now know it! And good to hear that Chris has had successful eye treatment. All relatively well here, thank you, other than that many old friends are suffering various degrees of discomfort – much of it age-related. I sent the HMSOldies update to 232 recipients on Sunday morning, and yours has been one of the ten responses received. I heard from Peter Macdonald (by telephone) over the weekend. He has had his health problems, which have confined his movements. And I received an email from Valerie Bailey in July: she was on good form. The weather here is up and down – showers followed by bursts of sun. Only four months to Christmas. All the very best, and may the good times be just around the corner! Reg.
