19 Jul 2021 – From ‘English Jack’ [Keating]

I hope you have been out the last few days soaking up all that Vitamin D and that you will continue to do it for the foreseeable future! Long live global warming!

Things over here are so-so. I am getting older and creakier as the days go on,  but if that’s all I have to complain about then I’ll accept it. I haven’t been up to much lately; just walking every now and then. I meet up with friends every week or so and go for a bellyful of beer and have a good talk. The last month or two I have been playing Texas Hold ‘Em Poker every week in the clubhouse of Crane Lakes Golf Community. I used to live there before moving to my present house. It costs you $20 to enter and you are given a few thousand in chips to play with. You play until you lose all your chips. If you manage to stay in until the last three then you win money. I came third one week and picked up $30.

The weather is, what can I say, Florida-like! The average high and low temperatures this time of the year are 91 and 73 degrees Fahrenheit respectively. Yes, they still use Fahrenheit over here and inches, feet and miles; and pints and gallons, although their pints are only 16 fluid ounces as opposed to the 20 fluid ounces in the Imperial pint. Their ton only has 2,000 pounds in it compared to the 2,240 pounds in the Imperial ton. I’d bet that not one American could tell you how many pounds are in a Stone! Anyway, enough of that.

As I walk around and do shopping, I am surprised by the number of people not wearing masks. A lot of shops do not require you to wear one! I say this because the number of new cases and the number of new deaths in the USA last week both rose by 44 per cent over the previous week.

I hope this finds you keeping well and staying safe.

Best wishes, Jack

Hello Jack, Good to hear from you. It’s been a while, but the current circumstances mean that everything has both stood still and galloped on. 2021- where did that come from? Bet it doesn’t seem 31 years since you started with HMSO. Of course, it’s the so-called ‘Freedom Day’ in England today. My walk around Norwich this morning indicated little change from last week- still masks on in shops. This snip from the local paper gives an indication. From a personal point of view, the high spot of the year to date is that my 17 year old granddaughter has, today, passed her driving test at the first attempt!

For obvious reasons, I am reminded of this classic.

Best wishes, Reg
