11 October 2023 – From Ian Billings

Good morning Reg. With the arrival of the last Phone Book in our area, I was browsing the introduction/history pages and noticed the link to the BT Archive.

This page has some photos of Harrow Press from the 1920s (and I have one of the first-edition telephone directories!). I doubt you will be able to name all those pictured! I also saw one of Ben Johnson Gateshead 1990 and doubtless there are others depending on the search term used.
Happy browsing! Ian.

Hello Ian, Good to hear from you, especially as contributions to HMSOldies are rare these days. An interesting photo, which will bring back memories of those relatively few readers who had the pleasure of working at Harrow Press. As you suggest, I can’t name all of those pictured, as Brain Fog means that I have to look inside my jacket when I am asked my own name (Montague Burton I believe). Possibly Robert can do better. To put the period into perspective I have consulted our oldest Establishment List and see that in 1952 – about 30 years after the photo was taken – the Senior Works Overseer, Frederick Newton, took home a maximum of £975 per year. A Grade IV Overseer was on a starting pay of £460 per year at the time: about the price of two tickets to a Take That concert these days. Whoever they are.
Best wishes, Reg.
