Jean Whitefield telephoned on 27 September, three days after Brian’s 85th birthday, with the sad news that he died, peacefully, at Priscilla Bacon Lodge this morning.

Brian joined HMSO in August 1958 and retired as Deputy Head of Laboratory, in Norwich. He will be remembered for his meticulous attention to the welter of British Standards which ended up in his in-tray for action in the 1970s-80s.

We felt surrounded with love which enabled us to keep strong as he would have wished.
